What it costs

Detroit to Chicago, priced by aircraft size

Estimated prices for the whole aircraft from Pontiac, including the 7.5% federal excise tax, at September 2026 rates. They assume an aircraft based in Michigan on an ordinary date; peak weeks run higher and a repositioning leg runs lower. Our advisory fee is a separate line on top.

Aircraft sizeTypical aircraftComfortableFlying timeOne way Same-day round trip
Turboprop Pilatus PC-12, King Air 350 4–6 1h 15m $4,500–$7,000 $5,500–$7,500
Light jet Phenom 300E, Citation CJ3+ 4–6 1h 00m $7,500–$9,500 $8,000–$9,500
Midsize Citation XLS+, Hawker 900XP, Learjet 60 6 1h 00m $8,500–$12,000 $8,500–$12,000

On a trip this short, one way and a same-day round trip cost about the same: most operators bill a two-hour daily minimum, and you pay for the aircraft’s flight home either way, so you may as well come back in it. How these numbers are built.

On this route. Short legs rarely cost proportionally less, because daily minimums and crew duty apply whatever the distance. Where the aircraft is based matters more here than on any long route — an aircraft already in Michigan avoids two positioning legs that would otherwise be most of the trip. This is also the corridor where a regular schedule is worth discussing, since repeat trips on the same route price differently from one-offs.

PTK PWK

Oakland County International (PTK) to Chicago Executive (PWK) — about 201 nautical miles and 1h 00m in a midsize jet.

The route

Which Chicago airport, and why it decides the trip

Three general aviation airports serve Chicago and the choice between them matters more than the aircraft does. At 201 nautical miles this is barely an hour in the air, so almost anything flies it. What decides the trip is which field puts you closest to where you are going, and how long the drive is at the other end.

01

Chicago Executive (PWK) for the North Shore and the Loop

The premier general aviation field in the Chicago area and the default for most private trips. North of the city, which suits Evanston, Highland Park, Lake Forest and downtown via the Edens.

02

Midway (MDW) when you need the south or west side

Handles private traffic alongside a busy airline operation. Closer to the Loop than O’Hare and considerably closer than Gary, but you share the airport and the ground time reflects that.

03

Gary (GYY) and DuPage (DPA) as the quiet alternatives

Gary is across the state line in Indiana and frequently the cheapest option, with an easy run into the south side. DuPage serves the western suburbs and Naperville. Both are quieter than Midway and worth pricing.

04

The real comparison is door to door

Driving to Detroit Metro, parking, clearing security and flying to O’Hare is comfortably three to four hours before you leave the airport. A PTK departure with a fifteen-minute arrival at the FBO puts you in the city in under two.

Aircraft

What I would quote for this trip

Three starting points rather than a catalog. Which one fits depends on how many of you there are and what you are carrying — the baggage and runway comparison sets out the numbers for thirty-four aircraft.

Citation CJ3+ or Phenom 300E

An hour in the air does not justify a large cabin. A light jet is the efficient answer for four to six, and the most common aircraft on this corridor.

King Air 350i

Turboprop economics on a leg this short, with the runway flexibility to use any of the four fields. Genuinely competitive here where it is not on a Florida trip.

Citation XLS+

When the group is seven or eight, or when a same-day return means the aircraft waits for you and the cabin matters more than the hourly rate. On an hour-long leg a full cabin is no hardship.

Prices for each size are in the cost table above.

Coming back

Chicago to Detroit

The return is the same trip in reverse, and it is often where the better pricing sits. We arrange Chicago to Detroit and Chicago to Pontiac as readily as the outbound — you do not need to be in Michigan to book it.

Two things make the return worth asking about separately. An aircraft that brought someone to Chicago has to get home, and an operator would rather sell that leg than fly it empty. When one lines up with your dates, a repositioning flight commonly prices 30% to 60% below the equivalent charter.

The second is that a one-way usually pays for the aircraft to reposition anyway. If you are going out and back within a few days, quoting it as a round trip often costs less per hour than two separate one-ways, because the aircraft stays with you instead of making four legs.

Either way, send both directions when you ask. Quoting the outbound alone hides the cheaper version of the same trip.

Nearby airports worth pricing

  • Chicago Midway (MDW)
  • Gary/Chicago (GYY)
  • DuPage (DPA)
  • Waukegan (UGN)

Often cheaper, quieter, or closer to where you are actually staying. Worth pricing alongside Chicago Executive rather than instead of it.

Questions

Detroit to Chicago

How long is the flight from Detroit to Chicago?

About 1h 00m in a midsize jet. The distance from Oakland County International (PTK) in Pontiac to Chicago Executive is roughly 201 nautical miles, which is nonstop for every aircraft we would normally quote on this route. Whether it is nonstop with your group and your luggage on your date is the question worth asking, because payload and winds both move that answer.

What does a private jet from Detroit to Chicago cost?

One way in a midsize jet, roughly $8,500–$12,000 including federal excise tax, at September 2026 rates, or $8,500–$12,000 for a same-day round trip.

Which airport should I fly from in Michigan?

Oakland County International (PTK) in Pontiac is the default for most of Southeast Michigan — the second busiest airport in the state, no airline terminal, and customs on the field. Willow Run and Detroit Metro both work, and Bishop International in Flint suits anyone north or west of the metro. The right answer is usually whichever is closest to your door.

Can I fly into a smaller airport near Chicago?

Often, and it is worth asking. Alternatives on this route include Chicago Midway (MDW), Gary/Chicago (GYY), DuPage (DPA). The constraint is runway length and the aircraft’s performance on the day. Give us the address you are actually going to rather than the airport you assume you need.

Do you arrange Chicago to Detroit as well?

Yes. We arrange Chicago to Detroit and Chicago to Pontiac exactly as readily as the outbound, and you do not need to be in Michigan to book it. Repositioning flights show up in both directions, since an aircraft that brought someone out has to get home. Send both directions and we will price the round trip against two one-ways, which frequently costs less per hour.

Who operates the flight?

An FAA-certificated Part 135 air carrier. YAJ Jet Charter is an air charter broker — not a direct air carrier, and not in operational control of any aircraft. The operating carrier is named to you, with its certificate and insurance verified, before you sign anything.
