What it costs

Detroit to Scottsdale, priced by aircraft size

Estimated prices for the whole aircraft from Pontiac, including the 7.5% federal excise tax, at September 2026 rates. They assume an aircraft based in Michigan on an ordinary date; peak weeks run higher and a repositioning leg runs lower. Our advisory fee is a separate line on top.

Aircraft sizeTypical aircraftComfortableFlying timeOne way
Midsize Citation XLS+, Hawker 900XP, Learjet 60 6 3h 50m $24,500–$41,000
Super-midsize Challenger 350, Citation Latitude 7–8 3h 40m $37,000–$54,000

A one-way range is wide because it depends on how much of the aircraft’s empty flight home the operator charges. Staying a few days? Send both dates: the return is priced both ways, and often costs less per hour than two separate one-ways. How these numbers are built.

On this route. The highest of the routes here, and the gap between a midsize with a fuel stop and a super-midsize nonstop is worth pricing rather than assuming. Golf season concentrates demand from January through April.

The route

Where the margin goes

Scottsdale is a straightforward airport with a serious complication: heat. Summer afternoon departures out of Phoenix are a genuine performance problem, and a westbound leg into headwinds eats range that looked comfortable on paper.

01

Density altitude in summer

A hot Phoenix afternoon degrades takeoff performance substantially. Morning departures are standard practice for a reason, and an aircraft that is fine in February may be payload-limited in July.

02

Westbound headwinds

Outbound legs against prevailing winds cost real range. A midsize aircraft comfortable eastbound may need a fuel stop going out with a full cabin.

03

Eight aboard changes the answer

This is where super-midsize starts earning its cost. With eight and luggage, a Challenger 350 or G280 does nonstop in both directions where a midsize is marginal.

Aircraft

What I would quote for this trip

Three starting points rather than a catalog. Which one fits depends on how many of you there are and what you are carrying — the baggage and runway comparison sets out the numbers for thirty-four aircraft.

Challenger 350

Around 3,200 nm and a hold that takes eight people’s luggage. The straightforward answer for a full cabin.

Citation Longitude

Similar capability with slightly more range and a very good hold.

Citation XLS+

Works for a smaller group traveling lighter, with a fuel stop as a possibility on the westbound leg.

Prices for each size are in the cost table above.

Coming back

Scottsdale to Detroit

The return is the same trip in reverse, and it is often where the better pricing sits. We arrange Scottsdale to Detroit and Scottsdale to Pontiac as readily as the outbound — you do not need to be in Michigan to book it.

Two things make the return worth asking about separately. An aircraft that brought someone to Scottsdale has to get home, and an operator would rather sell that leg than fly it empty. When one lines up with your dates, a repositioning flight commonly prices 30% to 60% below the equivalent charter.

The second is that a one-way usually pays for the aircraft to reposition anyway. If you are going out and back within a few days, quoting it as a round trip often costs less per hour than two separate one-ways, because the aircraft stays with you instead of making four legs.

Either way, send both directions when you ask. Quoting the outbound alone hides the cheaper version of the same trip.

Nearby airports worth pricing

  • Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX)
  • Phoenix Deer Valley (DVT)
  • Phoenix Mesa Gateway (AZA)
  • Glendale (GEU)

Often cheaper, quieter, or closer to where you are actually staying. Worth pricing alongside Scottsdale rather than instead of it.

Questions

Detroit to Scottsdale

How long is the flight from Detroit to Scottsdale?

About 3h 50m in a midsize jet. The distance from Oakland County International (PTK) in Pontiac to Scottsdale is roughly 1,442 nautical miles, which is nonstop for every aircraft we would normally quote on this route. Whether it is nonstop with your group and your luggage on your date is the question worth asking, because payload and winds both move that answer.

What does a private jet from Detroit to Scottsdale cost?

One way in a midsize jet, roughly $24,500–$41,000 including federal excise tax, at September 2026 rates. The highest of the routes here, and the gap between a midsize with a fuel stop and a super-midsize nonstop is worth pricing rather than assuming. Golf season concentrates demand from January through April.

Which airport should I fly from in Michigan?

Oakland County International (PTK) in Pontiac is the default for most of Southeast Michigan — the second busiest airport in the state, no airline terminal, and customs on the field. Willow Run and Detroit Metro both work, and Bishop International in Flint suits anyone north or west of the metro. The right answer is usually whichever is closest to your door.

Can I fly into a smaller airport near Scottsdale?

Often, and it is worth asking. Alternatives on this route include Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), Phoenix Deer Valley (DVT), Phoenix Mesa Gateway (AZA). The constraint is runway length and the aircraft’s performance on the day. Give us the address you are actually going to rather than the airport you assume you need.

Do you arrange Scottsdale to Detroit as well?

Yes. We arrange Scottsdale to Detroit and Scottsdale to Pontiac exactly as readily as the outbound, and you do not need to be in Michigan to book it. Repositioning flights show up in both directions, since an aircraft that brought someone out has to get home. Send both directions and we will price the round trip against two one-ways, which frequently costs less per hour.

Who operates the flight?

An FAA-certificated Part 135 air carrier. YAJ Jet Charter is an air charter broker — not a direct air carrier, and not in operational control of any aircraft. The operating carrier is named to you, with its certificate and insurance verified, before you sign anything.
