YAJ Jet Charter Air charter brokerage

Private jet charter from Pontiac and Oakland County International (PTK)

The second busiest airport in Michigan, and the one most private trips out of Southeast Michigan actually leave from. No airline terminal, no queue, no scheduled traffic to work around — you park at the FBO and board.

No cost, no obligation. Send the trip and you will get aircraft options, the operating carrier named, and all-in pricing before you decide.

See your estimate first. Nothing is sent until you choose to send it.

The field

What PTK actually is

Locals call it Pontiac. The FAA calls it KPTK. Either way it is the business aviation airport for the Detroit metro, and it is busier than most people outside aviation realize.

Oakland County International sits on 750 acres in Waterford Township, about five miles west of Pontiac and roughly thirty miles northwest of downtown Detroit. The FAA ranks it the second busiest airport in Michigan behind Detroit Metro, and Oakland County puts it among the busiest general aviation airports in the world, with around 142,000 takeoffs and landings a year. Counting business jets alone, it is Michigan’s busiest private jet airport and 29th in the country — see the 100 busiest private jet airports.

The single most common private jet here is the Hawker 900XP, by a wide margin. More than 150 corporations base aircraft there. Of the roughly 650 aircraft on the field, over 200 are jets. That concentration is the practical advantage for anyone chartering out of Southeast Michigan: a lot of metal sits close by, which means fewer positioning legs inside your quote.

It is open 24 hours. The tower runs from 6am to midnight, and the airspace is Class D underneath Detroit's Class B. There is no scheduled airline service, which is precisely why it works — no terminal to walk through, no airline schedule competing for the runway, and an uncongested ramp compared with DTW.

What can fly here

Runways, and why that decides your aircraft

Runway length is the first thing that rules an aircraft in or out, well before anyone talks about cabins.

RunwayLengthWidthWhat it means
9R / 27L6,521 ft150 ftThe primary. Handles midsize, super-midsize and large-cabin jets without restriction.
9L / 27R5,676 ft100 ftParallel. Plenty for light and midsize aircraft.
18 / 362,582 ft75 ftSmaller aircraft and training. Displaced threshold on 18.

At 6,521 feet, PTK is not the constraint on your trip — the destination usually is. A Learjet 60XR wanting 5,450 feet is comfortable leaving Pontiac and may not be comfortable arriving where you are going. That is the check worth making before an aircraft is chosen, and it is set out in the runway and baggage comparison.

Pontiac, Metro, Willow Run or Flint

Which Southeast Michigan airport you should use

Four fields serve private traffic here and they are not interchangeable. The drive is the part of the journey you actually feel, so start with whichever is nearest your door and work back from there.

Pontiac — PTK

The default. No airline service, multiple FBOs, 6,521 ft of runway, customs on site. Fifteen to twenty minutes from Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Troy, Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills.

Detroit Metro — DTW

Right when you need customs at an unusual hour, a commercial connection on the same trip, or you are south and west of the metro. Busier, and you share the airport with airline operations.

Willow Run — YIP

Long runways, no airline service, quiet ramp. The sensible choice for Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and the western suburbs, and it handles anything. More in the guide to chartering from Willow Run.

Bishop International — FNT

The northern option, covering Flint, Fenton, Grand Blanc and Lapeer. Longer runways than PTK and a much shorter drive if you are north of the metro. More in the guide to chartering from Flint.

Ann Arbor Municipal is convenient locally but its runway rules out most jets, so it is turboprop and very light jet territory only. Worth knowing before someone suggests it.

On the ground

FBOs, customs and what happens when you arrive

PTK has several fixed base operators, which is unusual for a field this size and generally good for you — it keeps fuel competitive and means there is usually ramp space. The one you use is determined by which operator your aircraft comes from rather than by preference.

You will be told which FBO before the day, along with where to park. They are separate buildings with their own entrances, frequently off a different road from the one you would expect, so the address matters more than the airport name.

US Customs is on the field, user-fee, from 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday and on call outside those hours. For anyone returning from the Caribbean or Mexico that removes a clearance stop on the way home, which is worth more than it sounds when you are landing at nine at night.

Where people go

The trips that leave Pontiac most

Distances are from PTK. Every one of these is nonstop in a midsize jet — whether it is nonstop with your group and your luggage is the question worth asking.

Pontiac to Sarasota & Tampa

About 920 nm, roughly 2h20m. The busiest corridor out of Michigan, and the one most likely to throw up a repositioning leg in either direction through the winter.

Pontiac to Naples & Fort Myers

Around 1,050 nm. Naples has a shorter runway and noise restrictions, which quietly narrows the aircraft list. Fort Myers is the easier alternative fifteen minutes away.

Pontiac to Palm Beach & Fort Lauderdale

Roughly 1,080 nm, straightforward for any midsize aircraft. Both are congested in season, so slots and FBO ramp space matter more than range does.

Pontiac to New York & Teterboro

About 480 nm, under ninety minutes. Short enough that almost anything works. Teterboro requires prior permission and fills up; Westchester and Morristown are the usual alternatives.

Pontiac to Nantucket & the Cape

Around 640 nm, and a summer weekend pattern rather than a business one. August congestion is the constraint, not the distance. Ask early.

Pontiac to Aspen, Vail & Scottsdale

1,250 to 1,600 nm. Mountain airports carry real performance restrictions, and an aircraft that manages the route may not manage the arrival. This is where aircraft choice stops being about comfort.

Pontiac to Chicago & Nashville

Around 230 nm to Chicago and 430 to Nashville — short enough to be day trips, and often quicker door to door than driving to DTW for an airline seat. Baggage is rarely the constraint, so the cheapest suitable aircraft usually wins.

Pontiac to Cabo, Cancun & the Caribbean

1,900 nm and up, so this is super-midsize territory with a full cabin. The useful detail is coming home: customs on the field at PTK means you clear here rather than stopping somewhere else first.

Why a local broker

I am thirty minutes from the field

Most of the companies ranking for “private jet charter Detroit” are not in Michigan. They are national call centers with a page for every city, and the person you speak to has never stood on the ramp at Pontiac.

I am in Fenton, half an hour from PTK and twenty minutes from Bishop in Flint. I know which FBOs are pleasant to wait in, which operators keep aircraft nearby, and which fields are realistic when the weather turns. More usefully, I am an FAA-certificated private pilot, so when an operator tells you the crew is out of duty time or the winds mean a fuel stop, I know whether that is real.

You also see what I make on the trip. The operator's price and my advisory fee appear as two separate lines, on a published sliding scale, and I take no commission from any carrier. That is unusual in this business and it is the entire proposition.

Questions

Flying private from Pontiac

Where is Oakland County International Airport?

In Waterford Township, just west of Pontiac, roughly 30 miles northwest of downtown Detroit — typically 35 to 45 minutes by car depending on I-75. It is considerably closer for anyone in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Troy, Auburn Hills or Rochester Hills, most of which are 15 to 20 minutes away.

Is PTK better than Detroit Metro for private flights?

For most private trips, yes. PTK has no scheduled airline service, so there is no terminal, no queue and no competing airline traffic — you park at the FBO and board. DTW is the right choice when you need international customs at an unusual hour, a commercial connection, or when you are coming from the western suburbs. Willow Run is a good alternative for Ann Arbor and the west side.

What size aircraft can use PTK?

Effectively anything in business aviation. The primary runway 9R/27L is 6,521 feet by 150 feet, which comfortably handles midsize, super-midsize and large-cabin jets. Light jets and turboprops have room to spare. The parallel 9L/27R adds 5,676 feet, and a third runway of 2,582 feet serves smaller aircraft.

Can I clear customs at PTK on an international trip?

Yes. User-fee US Customs is available at the airport from 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday and on call outside those hours. That saves an extra stop on the way in, which is one of the quieter reasons corporate flight departments favor the field.

How early should I arrive at PTK?

Fifteen to twenty minutes before departure is normal. Drive to the FBO rather than any terminal, park, and someone at the desk will be expecting you by name. Bags go straight to the aircraft. There is no security line for domestic flights, though photo identification is still required for every passenger.

How much does a private jet from Pontiac cost?

It depends far more on which aircraft and where it is based than on the distance. A midsize jet from PTK to Florida commonly lands in the low-to-mid twenty thousands one way. The single biggest variable is whether the aircraft is already in Michigan — positioning legs to collect you and return home afterwards sit inside your quote whether or not anyone points them out.
