Private jet vs commercial: how much time do you actually save?

Usually two to three hours each way on a nonstop trip, and more when the airline trip needs a connection. From Southeast Michigan we work it out at about 2h 05m to Manhattan, 3h 05m to Naples and 4h 35m to Aspen. Almost none of it is saved in the air. Here is every step, and a calculator for your own trip.

Door-to-door calculator

Airline or private, step by step

Pick the trip closest to yours, then change anything that doesn’t match. Every step is counted, from your driveway to the door at the other end.

Airline: DTW nonstop to Fort Myers (RSW), then 40 minutes to Naples. Private: Pontiac to Naples Municipal, 10 minutes from town. Checked bags and a rental car.

Driving Airport, taxiing and waiting In the air

The airline trip

  1. Drive to the airport 40m

To the airline airport. Allow more in rush hour.

  2. Park and get to the terminal 15m

Economy lots mean a shuttle; garages mean a walk and an elevator.

  3. Check bags 10m

Delta stops taking bags 45 minutes before a domestic departure.

  4. Security 25m

Standard lane on an ordinary day. Holiday peaks run longer.

  5. Security, PreCheck lane 10m

TSA says most PreCheck passengers wait under 10 minutes.

  6. Walk to the gate 10m

Longer at a big hub, a far concourse or a tram.

  7. Wait at the gate and board 40m

Boarding usually starts 30 to 40 minutes before departure. Delta wants you at the gate 15 minutes before.

  8. Push back and taxi out 17m

The average taxi-out at 50 major US airports is 17 minutes.

  9. In the air 2h 35m

Wheels up to wheels down, every leg added together.

  10. Connection 1h 40m

Taxi in, get off, change gates, board again, taxi out again.

  11. Taxi in to the gate 8m

Then wait for the jet bridge.

  12. Get off and walk out 15m

Waiting for the rows ahead, then the walk to baggage claim or the curb.

  13. Wait for checked bags 20m

If they arrive. About 2.4 million bags, wheelchairs and scooters were mishandled on the ten largest US airlines in 2025.

  14. Rental car shuttle and counter 30m

At many large airports the rental cars are a bus ride away.

  15. Rideshare or pickup 15m

The walk to the pickup zone, and the wait for the car.

  16. Drive to where you are going 40m

From the airline airport, which is often further out.

  17. Door to door7h 05m

The private trip

  1. Drive to the private terminal 30m

Pontiac, Willow Run or Flint for most of Southeast Michigan.

  2. Park at the FBO and board 15m

Arrive 15 minutes before. Park by the door, show photo ID, walk to the aircraft. Bags go straight on.

  3. Taxi out 5m

No airline queue. Weather and busy fields still mean the occasional wait.

  4. In the air 2h 45m

Nonstop. Cruise speed is close to an airliner’s.

  5. Taxi in 5m

To the FBO ramp, not a gate.

  6. Step off, bags to the car 5m

The crew unloads your bags. There is no carousel.

  7. Rental car at the FBO 5m

The FBO can have the rental parked outside when you land.

  8. Car waiting at the FBO 5m

Your driver or pickup waits at the door.

  9. Drive to where you are going 10m

Often shorter: private aircraft can use smaller airports closer in.

  10. Door to door4h

The assumptions, stated plainly. The airline side assumes you arrive about an hour and forty minutes before departure, a little tighter than the two hours Delta recommends, and an ordinary day with no delay. The drives assume you live closer to Pontiac than to Detroit Metro, which is true across most of Oakland County and the north side. If Metro is closer to you, set the two drives the same. Private flight times are the block times from our route pages.

Plan my trip
Where the hours come from

When private saves the most, and when it barely matters

The flight itself is close to a wash. The saving depends on how much of the airline trip is spent on the ground, and that changes a lot from one trip to the next.

Trips with a connection

This is where the day goes. Even a tight 75-minute layover adds well over an hour and a half once the extra taxiing is counted, and real connections are often longer: a Google Flights analysis by Upgraded Points put the average cross-country layover at 3 hours 34 minutes. A private flight goes nonstop, which is why Aspen saves 4h 35m in the calculator.

Places the airlines don’t serve well

Our airport database lists 3,038 US airports with a paved runway of 3,500 feet or more. Only a few hundred of them have airline service. Naples Municipal instead of Fort Myers, Nantucket instead of Boston and a ferry, Charlevoix instead of Traverse City and a long drive: landing ten minutes from where you are staying can be worth more than the flight.

Short hops and day trips

On an hour’s flight to Chicago, the airline trip is mostly airport. Private saves about 2h 10m each way, or 4h 20m over the day, which is often the difference between a day trip and a night in a hotel. See the Detroit to Chicago guide.

Groups, families and bags

Every extra person makes the airline trip slower: more people through security, more bags at check-in and at the carousel, more chances one of them is late. On a private flight the bags go into the hold as you walk up, and the group leaves together when everyone is there.

When the airline day goes wrong

About 78% of US airline flights arrived on time in 2024 and 1.4% were cancelled. A late inbound aircraft or a missed connection can cost the rest of the day. Private flights have their own risks, weather, air traffic control and maintenance among them, but not the knock-on effect of an airline network.

When it barely matters

One traveler with PreCheck and a carry-on, living near the airport, on a nonstop: that is the airline trip at its fastest. Run that version of New York through the calculator and the saving drops to about 1h 40m. For that trip, the airline is usually the right answer, and we will say so.

Security

Do private jets go through TSA?

Not on the charter flights we arrange within the US. There is no checkpoint, no line and no bin for your shoes. You arrive at the private terminal, called an FBO, about fifteen minutes before departure, and the operator checks every passenger’s government photo ID against the manifest before you board.

That does not mean anything goes. Hazardous materials are prohibited just as they are on an airline, the crew can refuse anything they consider unsafe, and the operator is responsible for who and what is on board. There is no 3.4-ounce liquids rule, because there is no TSA screening. If you are bringing anything unusual, from a large pet to sporting equipment, tell us before the trip, because the operator decides.

International trips are different at the border, not at the door. The operator files the passenger manifest ahead of time, you bring passports, and customs and immigration are cleared at the first airport of arrival. Coming home, the first stop is a US airport with a customs facility.

What the private terminal is actually like

The building you use is an FBO, a private terminal run for the aircraft and passengers on the field, not the airport’s own terminal. Pontiac has several good ones, and this is one we use most. It has its own parking lot a few steps from the door, a quiet lounge with coffee, refreshments and snacks, clean restrooms, and a short walk out to the aircraft. Arrive fifteen minutes early and that is the whole airport.

One of several private terminals at Pontiac (PTK). Park outside, have a coffee, walk to the aircraft.

The other comparison

Private jet vs first class

First class buys a better seat. It does not change the airport. Here is the trip to Naples both ways, for a group of six.

Cost, six people, one waySix first-class fares$16,000–$29,500 for the aircraft, tax included

On cost, first class wins for one or two people almost every time, and usually for six as well. The jet makes sense when the hours matter more than the difference, when the group is large enough to share it, or when the destination is badly served by the airlines. The private price is the midsize one-way range from our private jet cost guide; empty legs and one-way repositioning can bring it down a long way.

Questions

Private vs commercial questions

How much time do you save flying private?

Usually two to three hours each way on a nonstop trip, and more when the airline trip needs a connection. Worked door to door from Southeast Michigan, we get about 2 hours 5 minutes saved to Manhattan, 3 hours 5 minutes to Naples, and 4 hours 35 minutes to Aspen, where the airline trip connects in Denver. Almost none of it is saved in the air. It comes from skipping the terminal at both ends and landing closer to where you are going.

How early do you need to arrive for a private jet?

Fifteen to twenty minutes before departure is normal. You park at the private terminal, called an FBO, show photo ID, and walk to the aircraft while your bags are loaded. For an airline, Delta recommends arriving two hours before a domestic flight, stops accepting checked bags 45 minutes before, and wants you at the gate 15 minutes before.

Do private jets go through TSA?

Not on the charter aircraft we arrange for domestic trips. There is no checkpoint, no line and no liquids rule. The operator checks every passenger’s government photo ID against the manifest before boarding, and hazardous materials are still prohibited, just as they are on an airline. International trips clear customs and immigration on arrival, so bring passports.

Are private jets faster than commercial planes in the air?

Barely, if at all. Most midsize and super-midsize jets cruise at speeds close to an airliner’s, light jets a little slower, and turboprops noticeably slower. The time is saved on the ground: the drive, the terminal, the connection, the bag carousel and the rental car bus.

Is flying private worth it?

It depends on who is going and where. One traveler on a nonstop, with PreCheck and a carry-on, saves the least and pays the most per seat. A family or team of six with bags, on a route that needs a connection or ends far from an airline airport, saves the most, and splits the cost six ways. It still costs well above an airline ticket; what you are buying is hours, and on a day trip, often a night away from home.

Private jet vs first class: which is better?

On cost for one or two people, first class wins almost every time. A midsize jet one way from Michigan to Florida runs about $16,000–$29,500 including tax, or roughly $2,700–$4,900 a seat split six ways, which is well above a typical first-class fare. What the jet buys is time: no terminal, no connection, your own schedule and the airport closest to where you are going.

Do private flights get delayed?

Less often, but yes. Weather, air traffic control programs at busy airports and mechanical problems affect private aircraft too. What private flights avoid is the knock-on effect of an airline network: a late inbound aircraft, a crew timing out somewhere else, or a missed connection. For comparison, about 78% of US airline flights arrived on time in 2024 and 1.4% were cancelled.

Will a private jet wait if I am late?

Usually, within limits. The aircraft is there for your trip, so a short delay costs nothing but a phone call. The limits are the crew’s legal duty time, airport curfews and any air traffic control slot, and a long wait can add cost. Tell us as soon as you know.

Where these numbers come from

Airline check-in times are Delta’s published domestic check-in requirements: arrive two hours before, bags accepted until 45 minutes before, at the gate 15 minutes before. Delta is the largest airline at Detroit Metro. Taxi-out time is the Bureau of Transportation Statistics average of 17 minutes across 50 major US airports, and the 3 hour 34 minute layover comes from Google Flights data, both from Upgraded Points’ 2024 study. PreCheck wait: TSA, as reported by Newsweek, March 2026. On-time and cancellation rates for 2024 and mishandled bags for 2025 are Department of Transportation figures, summarized in U.S. PIRG’s Plane Truth 2026.

The remaining step times, such as parking, walking to the gate and waiting at the carousel, are our own estimates for an ordinary day, and every one of them can be changed in the calculator. Private flight times are the block times on our route pages; airline air times are typical scheduled air time. Last reviewed September 2026.
