What it costs

Detroit to New York, priced by aircraft size

Estimated prices for the whole aircraft from Pontiac, including the 7.5% federal excise tax, at September 2026 rates. They assume an aircraft based in Michigan on an ordinary date; peak weeks run higher and a repositioning leg runs lower. Our advisory fee is a separate line on top.

Aircraft sizeTypical aircraftComfortableFlying timeOne way Same-day round trip
Light jet Phenom 300E, Citation CJ3+ 4–6 1h 30m $8,500–$12,500 $11,000–$13,500
Midsize Citation XLS+, Hawker 900XP, Learjet 60 6 1h 25m $9,000–$15,000 $12,000–$17,000
Super-midsize Challenger 350, Citation Latitude 7–8 1h 20m $13,500–$20,000 $18,500–$22,500

A one-way range is wide because it depends on how much of the aircraft’s empty flight home the operator charges. A same-day round trip bills both legs, with the aircraft waiting for you. How these numbers are built.

On this route. The shortest route on this list and priced accordingly, though daily minimums mean a short leg rarely costs proportionally less. Where the aircraft is based matters more here than on a longer trip, because positioning legs are a larger share of a ninety-minute flight.

PTK TEB

Oakland County International (PTK) to Teterboro (TEB) — about 433 nautical miles and 1h 25m in a midsize jet.

The route

Teterboro’s rulebook

Teterboro is twelve miles from Midtown and runs on a different rulebook from a commercial airport. It is where private flights into New York land, and it operates under restrictions that catch first-time visitors out.

01

A 100,000 lb weight limit

Aircraft above 100,000 pounds have been barred from taking off at Teterboro since 1977, with the ban codified federally in 2003. That rules out the largest airliners-turned-private but leaves every business jet you would realistically charter.

02

Prior permission and slots

TEB requires PPR and runs a slot system. It is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country and it fills up, particularly around the UN General Assembly, major sporting events and holiday weekends.

03

Night noise limits

A voluntary curfew runs 11pm to 6am, with an 80 dB(A) departure limit on Runway 24 overnight and Runway 19 preferred for late departures. Late operations are possible but tightly managed.

What I would quote for this trip

Three starting points rather than a catalog. Which one fits depends on how many of you there are and what you are carrying — the baggage and runway comparison sets out the numbers for thirty-four aircraft.

Phenom 300E

Ninety minutes does not justify a large cabin. A light jet is the efficient answer for four to six.

Citation XLS+

Six in comfort with luggage, eight on a leg this short, and comfortably inside every Teterboro limit.

Citation Latitude

When the group wants to stand up and the extra cost is worth ninety minutes.

Prices for each size are in the cost table above.

Coming back

New York to Detroit

The return is the same trip in reverse, and it is often where the better pricing sits. We arrange New York to Detroit and New York to Pontiac as readily as the outbound — you do not need to be in Michigan to book it.

Two things make the return worth asking about separately. An aircraft that brought someone to New York has to get home, and an operator would rather sell that leg than fly it empty. When one lines up with your dates, a repositioning flight commonly prices 30% to 60% below the equivalent charter.

The second is that a one-way usually pays for the aircraft to reposition anyway. If you are going out and back within a few days, quoting it as a round trip often costs less per hour than two separate one-ways, because the aircraft stays with you instead of making four legs.

Either way, send both directions when you ask. Quoting the outbound alone hides the cheaper version of the same trip.

Nearby airports worth pricing

  • Westchester County (HPN)
  • Morristown (MMU)
  • Republic, Farmingdale (FRG)
  • Newark (EWR)

Often cheaper, quieter, or closer to where you are actually staying. Worth pricing alongside Teterboro rather than instead of it.

Questions

Detroit to New York

How long is the flight from Detroit to New York?

About 1h 25m in a midsize jet. The distance from Oakland County International (PTK) in Pontiac to Teterboro is roughly 433 nautical miles, which is nonstop for every aircraft we would normally quote on this route. Whether it is nonstop with your group and your luggage on your date is the question worth asking, because payload and winds both move that answer.

What does a private jet from Detroit to New York cost?

One way in a midsize jet, roughly $9,000–$15,000 including federal excise tax, at September 2026 rates, or $12,000–$17,000 for a same-day round trip. The shortest route on this list and priced accordingly, though daily minimums mean a short leg rarely costs proportionally less. Where the aircraft is based matters more here than on a longer trip, because positioning legs are a larger share of a ninety-minute flight.

Which airport should I fly from in Michigan?

Oakland County International (PTK) in Pontiac is the default for most of Southeast Michigan — the second busiest airport in the state, no airline terminal, and customs on the field. Willow Run and Detroit Metro both work, and Bishop International in Flint suits anyone north or west of the metro. The right answer is usually whichever is closest to your door.

Can I fly into a smaller airport near New York?

Often, and it is worth asking. Alternatives on this route include Westchester County (HPN), Morristown (MMU), Republic, Farmingdale (FRG). The constraint is runway length and the aircraft’s performance on the day. Give us the address you are actually going to rather than the airport you assume you need.

Do you arrange New York to Detroit as well?

Yes. We arrange New York to Detroit and New York to Pontiac exactly as readily as the outbound, and you do not need to be in Michigan to book it. Repositioning flights show up in both directions, since an aircraft that brought someone out has to get home. Send both directions and we will price the round trip against two one-ways, which frequently costs less per hour.

Who operates the flight?

An FAA-certificated Part 135 air carrier. YAJ Jet Charter is an air charter broker — not a direct air carrier, and not in operational control of any aircraft. The operating carrier is named to you, with its certificate and insurance verified, before you sign anything.
