How far can a private jet fly?
A light jet realistically flies 1,300 to 1,600 nautical miles with people and bags on board. A midsize jet 1,500 to 1,900, a super-midsize 2,600 to 3,200, a heavy jet 3,300 to 4,000, and an ultra-long-range aircraft 6,000 to 7,000. Published figures are higher, because they assume an almost empty cabin.
See how far any aircraft goes, or what your trip takes
Pick an airport and an aircraft to see the rings: realistic loaded range, and the published maximum it will never quite achieve with people aboard. Add a destination and it works the trip out instead — distance, flying time, which aircraft do it nonstop with your group, and where a fuel stop would land if none of them do.

What this tool can tell you, and what it cannot
From the numbers
Distance, flying time, which aircraft reach it with your group and bags aboard, where a fuel stop would land, and whether the runways at both ends are long enough. All of that is arithmetic, and it is on this page for free.
From me
What is actually available on your dates and what it costs. Which operator holds the aircraft, whether its certificate and insurance check out, whether that tail gets into that field on that day, and whether a repositioning leg makes the trip cheaper. None of that is in any database.
No cost, no obligation. The form arrives filled in with whatever you plotted above. You get aircraft options, the operating carrier named, and the cost split into the operator’s price and my fee.
See your estimate first. Nothing is sent until you choose to send it.
Private jet range by class
Published range against the range these aircraft actually fly with a comfortable cabin and everyone’s luggage. The gap is the part brochures leave out.
| Class | Published range | Realistic loaded range | What that reaches from Michigan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turboprop 5 aircraft · 4–8 comfortable |
912–1,800 nm | 500–1,200 nm | Chicago, Indianapolis, Nashville, Toronto. Short legs and short runways. |
| Very light 4 aircraft · 3–4 comfortable |
1,150–1,550 nm | 750–1,250 nm | The Midwest and the Northeast. Florida needs a stop. |
| Light 11 aircraft · 5–6 comfortable |
1,351–2,165 nm | 900–1,750 nm | Florida, New York, Nassau, Denver. The value choice for most trips. |
| Midsize 6 aircraft · 6–7 comfortable |
2,100–3,200 nm | 1,350–2,550 nm | All of Florida, the Caribbean, Texas, the mountain west. |
| Super-midsize 11 aircraft · 7–8 comfortable |
2,904–4,018 nm | 2,300–3,600 nm | Coast to coast nonstop, Los Cabos, most of the Caribbean. |
| Heavy 9 aircraft · 8–11 comfortable |
3,400–4,750 nm | 2,700–4,300 nm | Hawaii, Alaska, northern South America. Europe with the right conditions. |
| Ultra-long-range 10 aircraft · 10–12 comfortable |
5,200–7,700 nm | 4,400–7,100 nm | Europe, the Middle East and Asia nonstop with a full cabin. |
Realistic range is the published figure reduced by a factor for the class, the same standard used in the baggage and runway comparison: turboprops lose the most, ultra-long-range aircraft the least. It is close, not precise, and it moves with wind, temperature and runway.
What actually shortens the flight
People and bags
Fuel and payload trade against each other. Every passenger and every case is weight that could have been fuel. Published range usually assumes four people and almost nothing in the hold.
Wind
Westbound legs fight the jet stream. The same aircraft that reaches Los Angeles nonstop in April may need a stop in January. Eastbound, the wind pays you back.
Heat and elevation
Hot air and thin air both reduce how much weight an aircraft can lift off a given runway, so it leaves with less fuel. This is why mountain airports and August afternoons change the answer.
Runway at both ends
A short runway at the destination can force a lighter fuel load or rule the aircraft out entirely. The explorer flags destinations whose longest runway is shorter than the aircraft’s published takeoff distance.
Reserves sit on top of all of it. Every flight carries fuel to reach an alternate airport and hold, and that fuel is not available for the trip. When an operator says a leg needs a stop and the brochure says otherwise, this is usually why.

Private jet range, answered
How far can a private jet fly?
It depends entirely on the size of the aircraft. A light jet realistically flies about 1,300 to 1,600 nautical miles with people and luggage on board, a midsize jet about 1,500 to 1,900, a super-midsize 2,600 to 3,200, a heavy jet 3,300 to 4,000, and an ultra-long-range aircraft 6,000 to 7,000. Published brochure figures are higher because they assume a near-empty cabin and ideal conditions.
How far can a private jet fly without refueling?
The numbers above are all nonstop figures. The question that actually decides a trip is whether the aircraft can fly your distance with your group and your bags, which is usually 15 to 25 percent less than the published maximum. A Citation XLS+ publishes 2,100 nautical miles; with six people and their luggage, plan on 1,350 to 1,700.
Can a private jet fly from Michigan to Europe nonstop?
Detroit to London is roughly 3,250 nautical miles great circle, and a little more once routing is added. That rules out midsize jets. A large heavy jet can do it in the right conditions, and an ultra-long-range aircraft does it comfortably with a full cabin. The alternative is a fuel stop in the Northeast or at Gander, which adds about an hour.
What reduces a private jet’s range?
Four things, in roughly this order: passenger and baggage weight, because fuel and payload trade against each other; headwinds, which cost most going east to west; hot weather and high-elevation airports, which reduce how much weight the aircraft can lift off the runway; and runway length at both ends. Required fuel reserves are also part of every calculation and are not optional.
Is the range explorer a quote?
No. It is a planning guide built from published figures and a consistent set of assumptions, and it is deliberately more conservative than brochure numbers. The operator confirms the actual mission with real weights, weather and runway data before anything is quoted.
Which private jet has the longest range?
Among aircraft in normal charter use, the Gulfstream G650ER and Global 7500 lead at roughly 7,500 and 7,700 nautical miles published, which is genuine intercontinental capability with a full cabin. Below them, the Falcon 8X, Global 6000, Gulfstream G550 and G600 all sit in the 6,000 to 6,600 range.
